Covering your webcam won’t be sufficient to prevent hackers from watching you


The simple tape-over-webcam trick may not be enough to keep hackers at bay, prompting users to consider additional privacy measures.

A recent report by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researchers highlighted the potential risks to users’ privacy posed by ambient light sensors. While software controls and physical webcam shutters offer some protection, the study revealed that certain light sensors found in various devices could still be exploited to capture visual information without user consent. These sensors, often overlooked, can operate without explicit permissions and remain active even when users believe they are not in use.

The study conducted by MIT researchers focused on the Samsung Galaxy View 2, a large consumer tablet with an ambient light sensor located near the front-facing camera, a common design feature in many devices.

Despite being considered low-risk by manufacturers, ambient light sensors have been shown to be potentially vulnerable to hacking attempts. Previous research has indicated that these sensors, when coupled with screen light sources, can be used to deduce sensitive information such as keystrokes and passwords in a majority of cases. This underscores the need for increased awareness and mitigation strategies.

Identifying Devices Prone to Ambient Light Sensor Exploitation

The susceptibility of devices to ambient light sensor hacking varies based on factors such as sensor speed, measurement precision, screen brightness, and bit depth. The research findings indicate that certain tablet devices may be more susceptible to prolonged image capture through ambient light sensors. While the efficacy of this spying technique has been proven, there is room for enhancement and refinement.

The MIT researchers stressed the importance of ambient light sensors in device functionality while suggesting practical measures to mitigate potential risks:

  • Review and adjust ambient light sensor permissions.
  • Optimize sensor speed settings.
  • Reposition sensors away from user-facing positions.

With increased awareness, manufacturers can proactively address ambient light sensor vulnerabilities and enhance user privacy protections to counteract potential breaches.
